There is a lot of conflicting advice out there when it comes to parenting, and regarding things like your child’s dental health, it can sometimes be tough to keep all of the facts straight and do what’s best for your little one’s smile! Here’s a closer look at some of the most common myths floating around out there that involve children’s dental health; by separating fact from fiction, you can easily ensure your child’s teeth and gums are set up for success as they grow older.

Myth #1. Baby Teeth Don’t Matter Because They Fall Out

This isn’t true at all! Baby teeth are more than just temporary placeholders that guide the future adult teeth into place; they also help kids learn how to speak clearly, eat comfortably, and smile with confidence. Losing them too early can cause misalignment as well as long-term dental issues. Be sure you’re helping your child to care properly for their pearly whites at every stage in life.

Myth #2. Only Sugar Can Cause Cavities

Sugar is certainly one of the biggest contributors when it comes to cavities and dental decay, but it’s far from the only threat. Cavities are really caused by bacteria inside the mouth that feed on sugars and produce acids; however, these same acids are also made when starchy items are consumed. In fact, eating healthy options can even contribute to this acid formation if your child isn’t diligent about daily oral hygiene. So while excessive amounts of sugar should be avoided, due to their role in forming cavities, it’s not all that you need to be concerned about.

Myth #3. Fluoride Isn’t Safe for Children

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that’s found in almost all oral hygiene products, as well as most public drinking water supplies. It’s a highly safe and proven way to protect teeth and prevent cavities from becoming serious threats. During your child’s routine checkup, it’s normal for their dentist to suggest a supplemental fluoride treatment, as a way of providing an added layer of protection to their teeth between visits.

Myth #4. Kids Don’t Need a Checkup Until They Have All Their Teeth

Early dental visits, ideally by a child’s first birthday, are key to preventing problems and helping children to feel accustomed to the dental office. Even if you ensure that your child is brushing and flossing at home, they won’t have all of their teeth until they’re a few years old—and by then, it’s possible for many problems to have developed!

Ultimately, knowing the truth behind these myths will allow you to take a more proactive approach toward your child’s smile and help them to develop good habits for later in life!
